History and Funding

The Vales Registry of Congenital Defects (DRCV) was set up in April 1991 and joined the EUROCAT project in 1993.

The registry covers all births (livebirths, stillbirths and induced abortions) occurring in the Valles area. This county is situated in the north-east of Spain. The Valles is a highly industrialized area, it comprises a population of around 1,000,000 inhabitants. The Valles Registry has the participation of 8 maternity and 7 pediatrics units.

The main objectives of the registry are: 1. To know prevalence of congenital defects. 2. To detect trends in the prevalence of congenital defects 3. To evaluate the efficacy of prenatal diagnosis 4. To perform a cytogenetic and pathological study of pregnancy losses. Cases of congenital defects are registered from prenatal period until 3-4 days of life. For every case with congenital defect a designed co-ordinator of participating hospitals fills out a questionnaire. The forms are collected and revised in the co-ordinator registry centre.

The registry is located in the Department of Genetics, Consorci Hospitalari Parc Tauli (Sabadell, Spain). There are 4 persons working in the registry. The Registry is granted by the Fondo de Investigaciones Sanitarias (90-0658 and 94-1455) and The Health Department of Catalonian Government.
